Statement on Marriage

wedding-rings-ephesians
We believe:

1. That God wonderfully and immutably created each person as male or female. That these two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God (Genesis 1:26-27).

2. That the only kind of marriage that meets with divine approval is between a chromosomal man and a chromosomal woman (Genesis 2:18-25).

3. That marriage from the beginning is meant to be a single, exclusive union of one flesh between a man and a woman as delineated by Scripture (Genesis 2:18-15).

4. We all, as sinners, have made a mess of marriage through such sins as separation and divorce, sexual abuse, pornography, failure to exercise godly headship or submission, sexual selfishness, a lack of compassion and love, an absence of mutual submission and sacrifice, fighting and cruelty and silence, adultery, and so on. Therefore, we all have sins for which we need to repent.

5. That God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking His mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ (Acts 3:19-21; Romans 10:9-10; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

6. That every person must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity (Mark 12:28-31; Luke 6:31).

We reject:

1. The identification of any new gender categories such as Agender, Androgynous, Bigender, Gender Fluid, Transgender, and so on.

2. Any definition of marriage other than that as between one man and one woman.

3. Any intimate sexual activity outside of a marriage between a man and a woman.

4. All forms of sexual immorality (including adultery, fornication, homosexual behavior, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and use of pornography) as sinful and offensive to God (Matthew 15:18-20; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

5. Hateful and harassing behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual or group as this is not in accord with Scripture nor the doctrines of this church.
